Joan (Laframboise) Sullivan

Joan Laframboise Sullivan, 91, of Spencerport, NY, passed on December 18, 2022, leaving this world in the same way she lived within it: on her own terms and surrounded by those who loved her. Born on December 29, 1930, Joan grew up in Holyoke, Massachusetts and later traveled throughout Europe. When many of her classmates were graduating high school, getting married, and starting families, a fiercely independent and progressive Joan packed her bags and moved to NYC to study fashion and textiles at Pratt College. After graduating and starting a family in her mid-thirties, she moved to Spencerport in 1972, worked at Genesee Country Village, and later earned a Masters Degree at Brockport College in women’s history. She was especially interested in homesteading and women’s homemaking skills, writing her Masters thesis on apron-making and later researching and writing about New England cookbooks. She eventually relocated to Maine and later to New Hampshire where she continued to pursue her passion working with local historical societies and museums. Joan returned to Rochester several years ago to be close to her sons and their families.

She is survived by her loving sons Brian and Matthew; her daughter-in-law Elizabeth; grandchildren Ashley, Liam, Ava, and Christina; and many cherished friends. The family would like to express our gratitude to the wonderful people at Legacy at Parklands in Chili and to the kind and attentive medical staff at Highland Hospital ICU.
